Monthly Somali Disability cluster meeting

On Monday 30 November 2020 in Mogadishu the Monthly Somali Disability cluster meeting is held for the members of the cluster. The meeting is organised by the members of the cluster to discuss the top issue for the disability people and the disabled people organizations who are the key stakeholder working on the ground in Somalia

Around 11 member  organizations  participated the meeting where they have discussed the agenda which had five key points. The CRPD implementation,  the emergency aid respond,  SNE special need education,  livelihood, and political participation key tops on the ground in the country currently heading the election for the 2021 .

The participants  exchanged the five key point in the agenda where some of them raised question and problems that need solution  for short time and long time

  1. IEDP raised the concern for the lack of the CRPD implementation from the  local civil society organizations, international donors and the Somali federal government  institution who are key stakeholder for the CRPD implementation. Somali joined and ratified the CRPD 2019 where next year 2021 Somalia will send its first report to the   united nation  
  2. Dayah Disability Organization raised  question for the humanitarian aid respond to the disability people with coordination the DPOs who are actively working in the society for the PWDs persons with disabilities and members of their families need support and aid  in the hard time  HIDWO raised question about the shelter  for the disabled people in the IDP camps outside Mogadishu where some of them is faced damages from the rains in the last two months in the area. They have presented cases  who are victim for the rains that took some of their shelter hats, living furniture, mobility tools the wheelchairs,  crutches and white cane  sticks  for the blind people
  3. SAFDI Somali association female disability raised questions about gender empowerment for the disability females who are victim for discrimination in the public and private opportunities.  In the employment, education and humanitarian aid work in the country. SAFDI members shared with cluster meeting their concern for the GBV alarming  rape and sexual harassment against  the female persons mostly the incognito young girls  molested and assassinated. Where female with disability are more vulnerable the assaults.
  4.  SDPDO raised their concern the mobilization and coordination for the IDD international  day for the disabled people which is coming in the next days. The organization propsed joint venture for the members of the cluster and the all DPOs in the country organize their won activates in their area the capital city of Somalia and the federal state towns in the country. t
  5. UDHAN Somali visual impaired youth raised the gap for the blind people education in the country. There are tens of  students graduated from the secondary school where some of the top  universities rejected  admittance for the 2019- 2020 academic year   that made disappointment hundreds visual impaired student interested to study their high education
  6. SDN Somali disability network raised the important SNE special need interventions in the country. They presented that there are more than 15 DPOs member the network most of the working SNE and TVET for the disability. They have financial problems caused lack of partner supporting them. 

Findings

  • Lack of commitment the implementation  of the CRPD in Somalia from the civil society and the federal government institutions
  • Lack of inclusive for all humanitarian aid respond in the country where the PWDs are discriminated for their disability
  • Discrimination the DPOs disabled people organizations from the donors and governmental funds for development and humanitarian

Recommendation

  • Stakeholder in Somalia should Insure the  protection of the disable people rights
  • Stakeholder in Somalia should Insure the implementation of the CRPD
  • Stakeholder in Somalia should Insure inclusive for humanitarian and development
  • Stakeholder in Somalia should Insure political participation for the PWDs
  • Stakeholder in Somalia should Insure laws and acts for the PWDs
